How to teach yourself to ride
• • •
- Find a proper fit: make sure you can stand over your bike without the top tube pressing into you. Adjust your seat height so you can touch the ground with both feet.
- Practice hopping on and off: get comfortable with mounting and dismounting your bike. Use your brakes to stop smoothly and safely.
- Learn to glide: lower your seat so you can push yourself along with your feet. Lift your feet off the ground and coast for a few seconds. Try to balance and steer your bike.
- Maintain your balance and line of vision: look ahead where you want to go, not at your feet or handlebars. Keep your body relaxed and centered on the bike.
- Start pedal practice: raise your seat so you can pedal comfortably. Put one foot on a pedal and push off with the other foot. As you gain speed, bring both feet to the pedals and keep pedaling.
- Practice turning and braking: use gentle movements to steer your bike left or right. Squeeze both brakes evenly to slow down or stop.
